You don’t need to head to London’s Hoxton or Shoreditch to keep on top of what’s hot in the cocktail world.
Here’s our top 6 of the most important cocktails trends happening in the, well, most happening bars around town.
1 Back to the future: if you really want to be abreast of the cocktail trends then you have to step back in time and back to the tried and tested classics of the 60s and 70s. It’s time to get the shaker out and create Pina Coladas, Tom Collins or an Old Fashioned. Perhaps a Margarita on the side.
2 Keep it local: it’s not just our food that we want to keep local, but also our drinks. Or more likely the ingredients that go in to them. So for cocktails that means finding herbs, spices, fruits and other ingredients that all have a local or artisan feel to them. From naming the farm or the area they come from people want to know what and from where they are drinking.
3 The Healthier the better: the healthier the ingredient you can find the better. If you can tap in to the latest diets and health trends then you are on to a winner, which means keeping lots of kale, elderflowers, pomegranates or blueberries close to hand. It’s not just the breakfast bar that likes to keep it healthy but the cocktail one too.
4 Lower-alcohol and no-alcohol: it’s all about behaving responsibly now with our cocktail choices. Not only does is it good for you but the combinations are often, fresher, more fruity and refreshing. And there’s no danger going back for one or two more. Virgin Mary anyone?
5 All things sparkling: We’ve all turned to sparkling wine in our masses so why not in our cocktails too?. There are now lots of ways to introduce Prosecco, Cava or sparkling wine to our favourite cocktail or why not create new ones from scratch. Fizz is the way forward.
6 Sweet and sour and all things spice: like our popcorn we like to have that combination of sweet and sour far more in our cocktail choices too. And why not throw in some extra spice for good measure. After all the ice can always cool it down a bit.
* Remember not every cocktail bar tender you see is as clever as you might think. The majority now use pre-made or pre-batched cocktails either created on-site or bought by a specialist company like Funkin Cocktails.
